Uncovered
Victoria, British Columbia Uncovered
Victoria has repeatedly been recognized in numerous “top places to visit” guides, and there’s no shortage of reasons why. The capital city of British Columbia, located on the beautiful southern tip of Vancouver Island, boasts stunning ocean views, meticulously kept gardens, and a rich colonial and Indigenous history. Known for having one of the mildest climates in Canada, Victoria offers a welcome reprieve with less snow and lush, year-round greenery.
You might also know Victoria for its charming, walkable Inner Harbour, thriving afternoon tea culture, world-class breweries, and its proximity to incredible wildlife viewing. The most popular time to visit is in the springtime when the famous cherry blossoms are in bloom, and in the summer when patios are busy, whale-watching tours are hopping, and the days are long. Don’t skip out of an opportunity to visit during the Fall or Winter, either. All of this makes the city a great starting point for your Vancouver Island road trip!
Things to see and do
Things to See and Do From Vancouver Island
Vancouver Island is a fantastic starting point for your van life adventure. There are so many things to do, it’s hard to know where to start!
To get you going, here’s a short list of things we would put top of our list if camping Vancouver Island with a campervan.
- Surf or Storm Watch in Tofino/Ucluelet: Head to the West Coast and camp right near the ocean (e.g., at Surf Grove, Green Point Campground or Bella Pacifica). Spend your days hiking the Rainforest Trails or watching surfers at Cox Bay. Have a taco at the famous Tacofino. You won’t regret it.
- Hike the Ancient Giants in Cathedral Grove: Stop on the road to Tofino and walk among the colossal, old-growth Douglas-fir trees in MacMillan Provincial Park. It's a quick, awe-inspiring stop accessible right off the highway.
- Fish and Camp at Campbell River: Known as the "Salmon Capital of the World," this is a great spot to park the RV, charter a fishing trip, or take the ferry over to Quadra Island for a quieter camping experience.
- Explore the Pacific Marine Circle Route: Take your time driving the entire southern loop from Victoria, through the funky town of Sooke, to the rugged coastline of Port Renfrew, using your RV as your cozy base for beach-combing and tidal pool hunting.
- Dig for Clams at Rathtrevor Beach: Stay at Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park near Parksville, famous for having one of the warmest ocean low tides where the sea recedes almost a kilometre, creating vast, sandy tidal flats perfect for exploring. Nip into Nanaimo for a yummy Nanaimo bar and seaplane watch from the promenade.
